The Congress Government Coordination Committee on Tuesday set up a subcommittee to examine proposals to amend the Ecologically Fragile Lands Act and give the party’s views on it.

Addressing a press conference after the committee meeting here, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V.M. Sudheeran said the panel would study the issue and submit a report as early as possible. The panel includes Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed and Environment and Forest Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

The question of amending the EFL Act figured at a special Cabinet meeting earlier in the day. The amendments basically seek to give compensation to farmers evicted under the EFL Act, subject to a ceiling. There are around 1,000 applications from settler farmers seeking regularisation of their holdings and exemption from EFL provisions.
