Palm-chopping case: one more arrested

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday arrested one more person in connection with the Muvattupuzha palm-chopping case.

The arrested was identified as Mansoor, 47, a native of Choornikkara, near Aluva, and former Ernakulam district secretary of the Popular Front of India. He was arrested on the basis of a warrant, which had been pending since 2011.

In June this year, the NIA filed a chargesheet against Mansoor, allegedly part of a conspiracy to attack T.J. Joseph, a former lecturer at Newman College, Thodupuzha. Besides, he was also accused of taking part in a conspiracy to harbour the accused and extend financial assistance to families of the accused.

In judicial custody

Mansoor has been booked under IPC Sections 341, 427, 324, 326, 506(ii), 201, 202, 212, 153(A), 307 and 120 of IPC, Sections 3 and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, and Sections 16(1)(b), 18 and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

He was produced in an NIA court here and remanded in judicial custody till September 4.
