The Pallippad grama panchayat has initiated a programme to expand its green cover under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The programme envisages planting of about 18,000 trees in the panchayat.

The plants, being raised locally, are distributed through Kudumbasree. Fruit trees such as mango, jackfruit and medicinal plants are planted by the side of roads and public places. The panchayat’s programme ensures protection of the planted trees. A protective fencing is constructed around the plants and care will be taken to nurture them, panchayat president S. Rajendra Kurup said.

Vegetables

The project has been receiving good support from various sections of people including students, farmers, merchants and public servants. In view of the wide support for the programme, the panchayat is planning to take up cultivation of pesticide-free vegetables, he said.

Jackfruit trees

A programme to raise jackfruit trees in every home is to be taken up in the second phase of the current tree plantation drive.
