Palakkad IIT to function by June

The proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Palakkad will start functioning from its temporary campus by the next academic year beginning June.

M.B. Rajesh, MP, said Union Minister of Human Resource Smiriti Irani informed him that the admission process for the first batch would begin soon after ensuring necessary facilities on the temporary campus.

The Minister herself would visit Palakkad soon to oversee the arrangements, Mr. Rajesh said.

An expert committee that visited Palakkad last month had recommended the campus of the Ahalya group of educational institutions at Walayar for basing temporary classrooms.

Meanwhile, IIT Madras has been chosen as the mentor institute for the Palakkad IIT. IIT In the beginning, 120 undergraduate students will be enrolled in the Palakkad IIT. However, the authorities are yet to decide on the disciplines to be started here. IIT Madras will be involved in setting up infrastructure, faculty, and ensuring the quality of education at the new institute.

In the case of the permanent campus, proceedings are under way to acquire 650 acres in the Pudussery panchayat.

The Union government had directed the State to acquire more than 500 acres with rail and road connectivity, apart from availability of water.

An expert team from the Union Human Resource Ministry was satisfied that Pudussery had all these facilities.
