Chairperson of Palakkad municipality V. Devayani of the Congress has quit the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that the Congress has denied her the promised reserved seat in the municipal election.

Addressing presspersons at the BJP district committee office here on Friday, she said the selection committee of the Congress party in which she was also a member promised her ward no.7 and she had also signed the selection committee recommendations as was asked by party leaders.

But when the final list of candidates was announced, her name was found in ward no.14 which was won by the Communist Party of India (M) for the last two terms.

She alleged that she was cheated by the Congress district leadership by denying her the promised seat. So she decided to quit the party and joined the BJP. BJP district president C. Krishnakumar and State committee member N. Sivarajan, who were present at the press conference, said the party nominated her to contest from ward no.15.
