The three day annual conference of the Kerala Orthopaedic Association, KOACON 2012, which dwelled on the latest developments in orthopaedic surgery, concluded here on Sunday.
Amit Sinha, orthopaedic surgeon from UK, who talked on current concepts in shoulder replacement said that shoulder replacement surgeries will help in relieving pain in those with chronic diseases of shoulder, but the surgery was not popular in the country. Prof. Cherian Thomas from Thiruvananthapuram said at the conference on Sunday that there are options other than knee replacement for patients. Prof. Jayaprakash of Amala Hospital, Thrissur dwelled on the workplace stress for orthopaedics. Prof. Rajagopal from Pondicherry stressed the importance of having research to find out cheaper, better and indigenously developed treatment for orthopaedic problems.
Harish Kurup, consultant orthopaedic surgeon from UK in his talk on the topic , `Ankle endstage options—fusion or replacement’ observed though hip and knee replacement surgeries were popular in Kerala, ankle replacement surgery was not resorted to by patients here.
Dr.Rajasekaran from Kovai emphasised the importance of early surgeries in the case of accidents. He said that there were more deaths due to accidents than due to infectious diseases. Prof. K.C. Gopalakrishnan said that biopsy is a must for early detection of bone cancer. The sessions were coordinated by Dr. Mohamed Ashraf, organising chairman of the conference.
More than 500 orthopaedic surgeons across the State attended the conference in which international and national faculty took classes.
This year’s Prof. P.A. Alexander Memorial Continuing Medical Education (CME) on the topic, “Operative orthopaedics—Principles and Practice” was also held along with the conference.
Ajai P and Riju R, representing the Alappuzha Orthopaedic Society emerged the winners in the final of the State-level quiz conducted as part of the conference.
