Assembly proceedings were disrupted for 45 minutes following an Opposition bid to raise a submission against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday.

Soon after the question hour, Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan wanted to take up his submission on Mr. Chandy’s misusing his official residence to prevent K.B.Ganesh Kumar, MLA’s wife Yamini Thankachy from filing a complaint against her husband and Mr. Chandy’s refusal to accept her complaint of domestic violence and harassment.

Speaker G.Karthikeyan said that it was against the rules of business and precedents and the submission will be taken up after the calling attention motion listed by Abdussamad Samadani (IUML) and Mathew T.Thomas (JD). He also said that Mr. Achuthanandan had sought to repeal a submission on gazetted officers’ salary listed earlier and gave the fresh one only at 8.15 a.m.. Though Mr.Chandy expressed his willingness to reply, the Speaker insisted that the procedures cannot be altered.

The Opposition members then moved out of their seats and protested and the proceedings were suspended at 9.40 a.m..

When business resumed at 10.25 a.m., again the Opposition members stood up and protested and some of them moved to the well of the House, squatted and shouted slogans. Women members E. S. Bijimol (CPI), Geetha Gopi (CPI) and K. K. Lathika stood in front of Mr. Karthikeyan and shouted slogans. Amidst the din, the House passed the Kerala Lifts and Escalators Bill, 2013, the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Amendment) Bill, 2013 and the Calicut University (Amendment) Bill, 2013 and dispersed at 10.50 a.m.
