Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor may have witnessed a record turnout of over 60,000 during the Indian Super League football matches featuring the home team Kerala Blasters. Don’t expect that record to be broken during the coming FIFA Under-17 World Cup matches to be hosted by the stadium.
On Wednesday it became clear that not even half that number would be allowed inside the stadium. Owing to tight security measures, only 29,000 spectators will be able to watch the matches to be held in the stadium. Ticket sales for matches have also been restricted to match that number.
State Police Chief Loknath Behera on Wednesday reviewed the security arrangements being put in place for the event. Later, at a review meeting, Mr. Behera asked officials to ensure foolproof security.
The stadium will be thrown under a security net involving 1,900 police officers. This will be in addition to the force to be deployed at various points across the city.
There will be an entry point each in the front and back of the stadium. Even the stadium road will be out of bounds for those without tickets. Spectators will be allowed inside from 2 p.m. and the entries will be closed at 4 p.m. They will be able to watch both matches but will not be permitted entry back if they exit the stadium in between.
Strict restrictions have been placed on things spectators can take inside the stadium. Bags or even drinking water will not be permitted inside. Water and snacks will be made available inside the stadium.
Parking will be permitted on the St. Albert’s College ground in front of the stadium and that of the Kerala Water Authority land on the back of the stadium.
Parking space will be available for about 1,700 cars.
