Onam fete in cultural capital to begin with a ‘tug-of-war’

Celebrations will conclude with Pulikkali on September 7

THRISSUR: A tug-of-war between elected representatives and government employees at Thekkinkadu Maidan on Sunday evening will kick-start the district-level Onam celebrations here.

The celebrations will conclude with Thrissur’s own street pageant Pulikkali on September 7.

The cultural extravaganza will begin with a percussion ensemble led by Peruvanam Kuttan Marar. Around 50 artistes will participate. A music programme led by playback singer Franko will follow.

Minister for Industries A.C. Moideen will officially inaugurate the celebrations on Sunday evening. Minister for Agriculture V.S. Sunil Kumar will preside over the inaugural ceremony.

The Thiruvonam day celebrations at Thekkinkadu Maidan will begin at 5.30 p.m. with a performance by Yosha music band. Eminent percussionist Mattannur Sankaran Kutty and violinist Sabareesh Prabhakar will present a programme on evergreen songs.

A performance by the first women band of Kerala, Drutaah; Gatha Rahe Mera Dhil; bamboo music by Vayali of Arangottukara, and a Mega Music Nite led by playback singer Sithara will be the other major attractions of the celebrations.

Pulikkali will be held on September 7 at 4 p.m. Minister for Education C. Raveendranath will address the valedictory ceremony.

Onam celebrations in the district will be organised in accordance with green protocol, according to the district administration.
