Bhavani Amma, the oldest woman in the State who gave birth to a child through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET) method, died at a private Medical College here on Monday morning. She was 76.

It was reported that Bhavani could perhaps be the third oldest woman in the world to give birth to a child.

Son’s death

Bhavani, a retired school teacher from Muvattupuzha, gave birth to a boy at the age of 62, on April 12, 2004, through a Caesarean section. The child, Kannan, died at the age of two.

Bhavani arrived in Wayanad around five years ago and was giving mathematics tuition in a rented apartment at Buffalo Street at Mananthavady.

Old age home

A few months ago she collapsed and was admitted to the district hospital at Mananthavady. Later she was shifted to an old age home at Padinjarethara in the district.

She had undergone treatment at a private medical college after developing diabetes and old age-related illness for the past one month.

The old age home authorities said they had contacted the relatives of the woman and were waiting for their reply.
