The Athirappilly hydro electrical project will be a recipe for environmental disaster, Union Minister for Environment Jairam Ramesh has said.

“The Athirappilly forest area is another Silent Valley that needs to be protected,” Mr. Ramesh told The Hindu over phone, reacting to the news reports that the Centre will soon give clearance for the project.

“No Union Minister, as quoted in some reports, has spoken to me in regard to the Athirappilly project. It is 100 per cent false. I have not stated that the project will be cleared soon and I have made my stand very clear on the Athirappilly issue,” Mr. Ramesh said.
