Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asserted that the government would not raise the retirement age of employees.

Addressing leaders of youth organisations here on Tuesday, he said efforts were on to anticipate and report vacancies in government services using software. He told the meeting that the acute shortage of doctors in service had forced the government to raise their retirement age.

Moves were on to resolve the problems in the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, revise the unemployment dole and route all temporary appointments through employment exchanges. Officials overlooking seniority in appointments would be dealt with severely.

Mr. Vijayan said the government would conduct a study of the contributory pension scheme. Cautioning the youth against falling prey to motivated social media campaigns, he said many had been misled and trapped by such propaganda. The WhatsApp hartal in the State was a sinister effort to create social disturbance. Youth organisations should also be vigilant against efforts to question scientific temper.

Mr. Vijayan urged youth organisations to lead the campaign against substance abuse and to promote the spirit of diversity. He asserted that the government would take stern action against efforts to create communal strife in Kerala.

He said 70,000 vacancies had been filled and 13,000 posts created over the last two years.
