The police were yet to make any arrest in connection with the murder of CPI(M) activist M.B. Balakrishnan at Bara, near Mangad, on Monday night.

According to a police complaint filed by a friend, Balakrishnan was stabbed in the chest by three men, whom he identified as Pradeep, Shibu, and Majeed, to settle political scores.

The CPI(M) alleged that the Congress was behind the murder.

Kanhangad Circle Inspector of Police Babu Peringath, who is heading the investigation, said the police had received some clues about the accused. He said they had fled the State after committing the crime.

The murder triggered sporadic incidents of violence in the area. A few houses of local Congress leaders came under attack while a car, parked near the house of a Youth Congress activist was damaged, allegedly by CPI(M) workers. The Left Democratic Front observed a hartal in the district on Tuesday. Senior police officials, including Inspector General of Police (North) Suresh Raj Purohit, visited the spot of the murder on Tuesday.
