The 45-day ordeal of stranded Indian families in Libya is finally coming to a close.
Nine Indian families stranded in Libya are expected to return by Thursday, according to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Office.
As many as 29 persons, including seven infants from nine families, have been stranded in Motred, a seaside city in Libya, since March 26 when they were moved out of the Zawiya Medical Centre campus in the ancient city of Sabratha following a grenade attack on their apartments. The attack had claimed the lives of Sunu Satyan, a 29-year-old nurse, and her 18-month-old son Pranav.
The 29 persons are already on their way to Tripoli. From there, they will fly to Istanbul in Turkey by Libyan Airlines and then take the Doha-Kochi route to reach the State by 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Of the nine families, six are from Kerala and three belong to Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, D. Vipin Kumar, husband of Sunu Satyan, said the stranded Indians had not yet completely sorted out their financial matters. “While the hospital authorities had transferred their arrears and other benefits, there is a ceiling on withdrawals. This may force the families to be at the mercy of local agencies,” he said.
