NGT takes case on eco damage

Serves notice on Idukki Collector

The National Green Tribunal has taken suo motu case on the environmental and ecological damage in Munnar.

Based on media reports, the Chennai bench of the tribunal sent a notice on Wednesday to the chiefs of the Forest and Pollution departments and the Idukki Collector noting that uncontrolled development activities had destroyed the hills and the rich biodiversity of Munnar, causing harm to the environment.

Multistorey buildings had been constructed flaunting environmental rules. Uncontrolled development activities had damaged the hills and water sources.

The bench will consider the case on May 3.

Earlier, following a request by Bharatiya Janata Party State president Kummanam Rajasekharan, Union Minister C.R. Choudhary had visited Munnar and gave a report to the Prime Minister on the environmental damage caused by development activities and encroachments there.
