The district panchayat will be launching six unique projects on the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5 as part of its environment protection programme. The decision in this connection was taken at a high-level meeting held at the district panchayat hall here on Tuesday.
District panchayat president S. Jayamohan said that this would be yet another model programme of the district panchayat which had won this best district panchayat award of the Union government for implementing unique projects beneficial to the people. He said the projects would be implemented through the local bodies in association with the Forest Department.
One of the projects in ‘‘Kuttivanam’’ through which mirco forests comprising 10 different trees would be created wherever space in available. Schools, office complexes, and other open space on public land where garbage is dumped would be used for the purpose. The move would to some extent help in preventing wanton dumping of garbage, Mr. Jayamohan said.
As many as 70 ‘Nakshatthravanams’ or horoscope forests would be created in the district. There are 27 horoscope trees and these would be supplied through the Forest Department.
Medicinal herbs
The Ittiva and Veliyam panchayats would be covered by the Ente Bhavanam — Haritha Bhavanam project. Under the Oushada Muttam project, 100 different variety medicinal herbs would be planted in the courtyards of government office complexes and all government Ayurveda hospitals. Under the Panchayatil Oru Kavu project all panchayats in the district will have its own sacred grove. And finally, there is the bamboo planting project to be carried out on the banks of the Ithikkara and Kallada rivers for prevention soil erosion. The meeting was inaugurated by M.A. Baby, MLA. P.K. Gurudasan, MLA, spoke.
