: Minister for Rural Development K.C. Joseph said here on Tuesday that a new development block with Alakkode as its headquarters would be sanctioned to accelerate development activities in the area located in the eastern hill parts of the district.

Speaking after inaugurating a new bridge at Alakkode here on Tuesday, the Minister said after the proposed bifurcation of Alakkode into Alakkode and Therthalli panchayats, the government would take all steps necessary to ensure development in both the panchayats. The new Alakkode development block would speed up development activities in the area, he said.

A public health centre (PHC) would be established at Alakkode, as the existing PHC would be that of Therthalli panchayat, he said.

Mr. Joseph said though non-availability of land remained a major obstacle to infrastructure development, the hill areas of Cherupuzha, Therthalli, Alakkode, Karuvanchal and Chemperi in his constituency, Irikkur, would have overall development as 45 km of the hill highway starting from Kasaragod would be located in the constituency. Alakkode panchayat president Jose Vattamala presided. The Minister, at another function, released a biography of the late P.R. Ramavarma Raja, a prominent social figure.
