New dam during the tenure of government: George

October 06, 2011 05:05 pm | Updated 05:05 pm IST - KATTAPPANA:

A new dam will be constructed at Mullaperiyar during the tenure of this government itself, government Chief Whip P.C. George has said.

Delivering the keynote address at a function to dedicate the book Will Mullaperiyar dam break? written by journalist V.Jayakumar to the Mullaperiyar Agitation Council at Karimkulam Chappathu on Thursday, Mr George said there was no objection in providing water to Tamil Nadu and a solution to the vexed issue should not be delayed.

He said the security of people living downstream of the dam should come first and it should not be compromised while ensuring water to Tamil Nadu.

He said the State government was keen to find a solution to the Mullaperiyar issue. The government stood for the welfare of the people and the Mullaperiyar issue needed an immediate solution, he said.

“There is no point in raising objection to a new dam there as the government is not against providing water to Tamil Nadu,” he said.
