The increasing power shortage has started affecting life in the State and it is time to take effective measures to streamline power usage, George Mathew, Energy Conservation Society State vice-president, has said.
In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Mathew said streamlined use of power was a must to tide over the crisis.
He said the society would extend its energy conservation to more villages and towns in the State.
Mr. Mathew said the State’s peak-load consumption had crossed the alarming level of 3,000 MW, and the demand for power was set to grow further in the coming years. Reducing the use of electricity during peak-load hours was most important at this juncture.
Misuse of power
Consumers should stop misuse of electricity, and desist from using motors, iron, fridge, water heater, mixer, pumps and so on between 6.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Overloading of power transmission lines would increase the chances of power disruption and accidents, he said.
Sustainable development of the country was possible only through balanced technological development, together with switching over to renewable energy and recycling techniques, he said.
Mr. Mathew said it was time Kerala formulated an energy policy, exploring strategies for sensible utilisation and conservation of depleting conventional energy resources.
