The suspected Leshkar-e-Taiba militants Thadiyantavide Nazir and Shafas Shamsuddin were brought here in connection with the investigation into their activities and terror links, even as senior police officers remained tight-lipped about the places where the duo were being taken for questioning.

Nazir and Shamsuddin, hailing from the suburbs of this town, had been brought here in the evening, the Inspector General of Police Tomin J. Thachankar said. The police officers here refused to give details about the locations where the two were being taken to for questioning. The duo were brought here apparently by road and understood to have been taken to a secret location here. The police sources said that they would be taken to different places here as part of the investigation into the terror operations of Nazir and Shamsuddin. They had been arrested by the Bangladesh Rifles and then handed over to the Border Security Forces on December 2. Subsequently, they had been handed over to the Bangalore police for interrogation in connection with their alleged involvement in the bomb blasts in Bangalore.

According to the sources, officers of the Karnataka Police and Kerala Police accompanied the two who were also allegedly involved in the bomb blasts in Kozhikode in March 2006.

Meanwhile, the police searched for explosives at Ayikkara here in the afternoon. The search was apparently conducted on the basis of information secured from Nazir during his interrogation in Bangalore that some explosive materials had been thrown into the water near the Mappila Bay Fishing Harbour at Ayikkara. The police, however, could not recover any explosive items from there. The police had unearthed one kilogram of ammonium nitrate from the compound of a house at Chakkarakkal here on

Nazir and Shamsuddin had been among the five absconding accused in the in the charge sheet filed by the Edakkad Police Station by the Joint Investigation Team at the Thalassery court. The 23 accused, including the four Keralites who had been killed in Jammu and Kashmir in an encounter by the security forces, were accused of plotting to wage a war against the country. Nazir was termed as the mastermind of the terror module that operated in the State. He was accused of conducting classes in different parts of the State including here to mobilise the youths to be recruited for the terror activities.
