Deceased Naval cadet Pranay Shivcharan Lanjewar was accorded a ceremonial military farewell at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala here on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old cadet from Maharashtra had died during the phased physical conditioning training at the INA on July 25.

Legal procedures

The body of the cadet was handed over to his father Shivcharan Mansaram Lanjewar after all legal and medical procedures at the end of the ceremony.

INA Deputy Commandant Rear Admiral M.D. Suresh placed a wreath on the body. Wreaths were also placed on behalf of the Commandant, officers, and personnel of the INA by Commodore Ravi Shankar, Registrar of the INA. Cadets also paid their homage to the deceased.

Heart defect

The INA said the post-mortem conducted on the body of the cadet at the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital established that the cadet had congenital heart defect by birth.

The defect had not been detected by the medical checks done during the cadet's induction into the academy, it said.

The cadet had joined the INA on July 10. The INA arranged for the body to be flown from Mangalore to Nagpur.

A guard of honour is being provided by the Indian Air Force during the funeral of the cadet at his native village in Bhandara district in Maharashtra.
