An expert team comprising project engineer and architect on Sunday inspected and demarcated the site identified for the indoor stadium being developed for hosting an indoor event of the National Games at the proposed Sports Complex site at Mundayad in Kannur.
The team led by T.C. Raveendranath, Superintendenting Engineer of the National Games Secretariat, and S.S. Kulkarni, the architect and the project management consultant for all the National Games venues in the State, inspected the 6.55 hectare land at Mundayad, handed over to the Sports Council for the development of the Sports Complex. The area for constructing the indoor stadium was demarcated by the team.
Mr. Kulkarni told The Hindu that the indoor hall was being planned as a facility with international standards for holding all kinds of indoor sports activities. The 60 metre x 40 metre indoor stadium having all the amenities was probably the biggest indoor stadium in the State, he said, adding that 5000 people could watch the sports events in the fully-airconditioned hall. The project was estimated to cost between Rs. 22 crore and Rs. 25 crore, he added.
The land handed over for the proposed sports complex was part of the Regional Poultry Farm under the Animal Husbandry Department. Sports Council members said that the State government had already allotted funds for the development of the indoor stadium there.
District Sports Council president O.K. Bineesh, Vice-President M.K. Nasar and National Games Technical Committee member Joseph Thomas accompanied the team.
