Murder accused surrenders in court

March 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - Palakkad:

Karingath Syed Alavi, the second accused in the Kollangode Mani murder case, surrendered in the District Court here on Monday, five days after the court awarded double life term to the first and fourth accused in the case.

The case was registered 19 years ago.

Syed Alavi, alias Bava, from Vilayur, near Pattambi, remained at large after obtaining conditional bail in the case.

The court, after delivering the sentence of the first and fourth accused, had issued warrants against Syed Alavi and third accused Abdul Khader of Vallapuzha and ordered action against those who provided surety when they sought bail.

Abdul Khader was still at large. The court had acquitted three other accused in the case.

The prosecution had alleged that the accused had links with Al Ummah. Kollangode Mani, who was the mandalam president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Muthalamada region, was hacked to death on September 13, 1996.

The prosecution said the murder was in retaliation for the killing of one Shamsudheen in Muthalamada, allegedly by BJP activists. Shamsudheen was accused of raping and murdering a woman in the neighbourhood. The prosecution argued that the accused committed the crime after consulting some key accused in the Coimbatore serial bomb blast case having Al Ummah links.
