The government is exploring the possibility of constructing multi-tier roads in view of the limitations in acquiring the land required for development of roads, including National Highways, Public Works Minister G.Sudhakaran has said.
The Minister was inaugurating the Mallappally-Cherukolpuzha-Kozhencherry Road which has been modernised with Central assistance at a function held at Theodickal, near Ranni, on Friday evening.
According to him, Kerala is a State where land acquisition for road development works has been a major problem and the only solution is to opt for a multi-tier road system that makes the roadways ply one above the other. He said the Public Works Secretary has been asked to conduct a feasibility study on the proposed mode and submit a report to the government at the earliest.
Mr Sudhakaran said the government was also seriously considering construction of such a road along a one-kilometre stretch above the National Highway on an experimental basis.
The Minister said all roads in Kerala come under the purview of the new Highway Act passed by the Union government. The government has got the power to confiscate construction materials and other articles stocked by the roadside as such illegal activities led to road accidents, he said.
