Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan unveiled a bronze bust of Muloor S. Padmanabha Panicker, poet and satirist, installed by the Mezhuvely grama panchayat near the public market at Elavumthitta, near Aranmula, on Friday. The bronze bust was installed in connection with the centenary celebrations of the public market founded by Muloor.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Achuthanandan said Muloor was a social reformer who had secured a respectable position for those sections of society who faced social discrimination in the field of literature and culture. He said Muloor had used his literary skill as a weapon to fight social injustice and evil practices prevailing in society.

Mr. Achuthanandan said the recognition earned by Muloor in literature in an age of caste discrimination was an inspiration and a guiding spirit to poet Kumaran Asan and others in the later period. Muloor, who was a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru, was in the forefront of the struggle against the caste system, he said.

Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby presided over the function.
