The Mullaperiyar relay hunger strike completed 1,400 days on Monday. The central committee members of the Mullaperiyar Samara Samithy at a meeting at Upputhara alleged there was a concerted move on the part of Tamil Nadu to impress up on the expert committee that the dam posed no threat and the Pathinettam canal was opened with such an objective.

“This was to show that there was no pressure of water on the dam and an effort to reduce the water level,” said samithy chairman C.P. Roy. He added that public comments by AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa and PMK leader Vaiko pointed towards this.

He said the condition of the century-old dam could not be suppressed by their comments and temporary measures as it was proved beyond doubt that the dam posed a threat to the lives of those living downstream. He said decommissioning of the dam was the only solution to the issue.
