Eco groups and environmentalists played a key role in making the common man aware of the grave need for conservation of rivers and nature, said Mr. Anto Antony, MP.
The MP was releasing a 157-page book, ‘River Pampa, an environmental study’, written by Mr N.K. Sukumaran Nair, Pampa Parirakshana Samiti (PPS) general secretary, at a function held at Pathanamthitta Town Hall on Thursday.
Lauding the contributions of Mr. Nair as an environmentalist, Mr. Antony said it was his relentless campaign for the cause of the river Pampa that had paved the way for inclusion of the Pampa in the National River Conservation Programme.
He also expressed deep concern over reports stating pollution of even the ground water due to seepage of toilet waste.
Receiving the first copy of the book, Ms. Susamma Mathew, District Education Officer, said circulation of the book at the school level would be of great help in promoting nature conservation among school children.
She said environmentalists like Mr. Nair and eco groups like PPS have been doing a great service to the nature as well as the society for the past several years.
In his presidential address, Mr. K.Sivadasan Nair, MLA, said PPS has been crusading against anti-river activities in Pampa, inviting the ire of the so-called sand and land mafia. Mr. Nair’s book is a highly useful handbook for research students in the field of river conservation.
Mr. Peelipose Thomas, former Planning Board member and Prof T.K.G. Nair, District Library Council chairman, said Mr. Sukumaran Nair’s efforts in taking up the pollution problem facing river Pampa at the national level was what led to the Centrally-sponsored river conservation programme, Pampa Action Plan.
Fr Thomas Peeliyanickal, Kuttanad Vikasana Samiti president, Mr. K.R. Prathapachandra Varma, BJP national executive committee member, Mr. T.N. Ramakrishna Kurup, PPS president, Mr. Jose Parakkadavil, former principal of BAM College at Thuruthicaud and Mr. P.R. Kuttappan Nair, Elenthoor Block Panchayat member and Mr. N.
