MP laments erosion of Nehruvian values

April 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - KANNUR:

P.K. Sreemathi, MP, has said that the country is experiencing an erosion in Nehruvian principles that upheld secularism and democracy. Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Secularism and nationalism: Nehru’s perspective’ held here on Tuesday by the Information and Public Relations Department and the Jawahar Public Library, Ms. Sreemathi said Jawaharlal Nehru as an architect of modern India had worked to strengthen secularism as a bulwark against the sectarian ideas of the forces behind the assassination of Gandhiji. Today, those forces were reversing the values that Nehru had upheld, she said.

Parliament during Nehru’s tenure as Prime Minister was known for the Nehruvian spirit of respect for Opposition and tolerance towards differing views, she said.

Nehru had never compromised democratic principles, observes Sreemathi
