The State government will continue its efforts to spread agriculture to more areas and to ensure pesticide-free vegetables for the public, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Vishukkani-2017’ fruit-vegetable market network opened by the Agriculture Department in association with the Horticorp and the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Kerala here on Tuesday.

New people

“The government is preparing the ground for a leap in the agriculture sector. We have to consider seriously the fact that there has been negative growth in the sector over the past few years. Development of the State will not be complete without the development of the agriculture sector. The government is trying to bring in more new people into the sector and to ensure reasonable profits for the farmers,” said the Chief Minister.

He said that the need of the hour was for everyone to take up vegetable farming, as the State was not producing even half of what was required. Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar presided over the function.
