After nearly a fortnight’s lull, the southwest monsoon is set to pick up in intensity over Kerala during the week that lies ahead, according to the numerical weather prediction models of the India Meteorology Department (IMD) based on Saturday’s conditions.

The monsoon had remained weak over the State since June 23. Rainfall over Kerala for the season beginning on June 1 is deficient by 37 per cent as on July 5. Against a long-term average of 792.9 mm of rainfall for the period, the State received only 497.7 mm of rainfall.

The entire West Coast is likely to receive fairly widespread rainfall during the week ending July 12, with the intensity of the downpour being more over Kerala and coastal Karnataka.

The flow of monsoon winds from the southwest parts of the Indian Ocean, across peninsular India, is gathering in speed because of the distant influence of a typhoon, nicknamed Neoguri, now in position over the Pacific Ocean and moving towards the Japanese Islands.
