: Minister for Rural Development K.C. Joseph has said that the leadership and the willpower of leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel helped the country remain united and make great achievements in science and technology.

In his Republic Day address at the ceremonial parade at the Parade Ground here on Monday, the Minister called on the people to defeat the moves of some sections to glorify Nathuram Godse who had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. Stressing that the Gandhian principles are still globally relevant, he urged the people to carry the banner of secularism, fraternity and unity at a time when attempts were on to sow the seeds of hatred and violence.

The Minister also said that the decision to dissolve the Planning Commission was suspicious. The alternative mechanism was yet to evolve, he added. Mr. Joseph said the role of non-resident Keralites for the development of the State could not be ignored. The Minister also said that the problems of Gulf returnees had to be addressed.

Earlier, the Minister hoisted the National Flag and received salutes from the contingents of Police, Excise, National Cadet Corps, Junior Red Cross and others that took part in the parade. The Kerala Armed Police Battalion IV and the NCC unit at the Sree Narayana College here won the Collector’s ever-rolling trophies for uniformed wing and students’ wing respectively that participated in the parade. Akshaya Mission Assistant Co-ordinator Noushad K., school teacher Raveendran K. and Chembilode panchayat secretary V. Ratnakaran were presented prizes in the civil service category.
