Decision comes in the wake of increasing complaints from students

In the light of the increasing complaints from students, Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has decided to constitute a five-member commission to look into the functioning of autonomous colleges affiliated to the university.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Syndicate here on Friday.

According to authorities, the university has been receiving complaints regarding the award of internal marks, glaring disparities in index marks calculation of candidates who applied for the same programme in different autonomous colleges, unjust denial of admission rights to privately registered candidates in autonomous colleges which close their admissions prior to the publication of their results, and reported absence of infrastructural facilities for some of the new programmes in autonomous colleges which were granted affiliation without conducting proper inspection in consideration of the status of autonomy of the institution concerned.

P.K. Harikumar, Syndicate member, will head the commission.

The commission will also hold an inquiry into all autonomous colleges to ascertain whether they are functioning in accordance with the relevant rules, statutes, and regulations.

The meeting constituted a monitoring committee to ensure the smooth conduct of university examinations which has come in for grievous criticism. The committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring timely conduct and declaration of results of the university examinations.

The Syndicate decided to take necessary steps to ensure that the examinations are conducted and results are declared as per the examination calendar. It has been decided to make the examination duty and valuation part of the official duty of teachers and employees. This will be linked to the promotion of teachers. Any serious flaw in valuation will be taken seriously by the university and the concerned teacher will be held responsible for the mistake.

Those students who fail in the fifth semester will be given a supplementary chance along with the sixth semester examination, allowing the candidate to save a year. It has also been decided to issue Grade Cards only after the final semester examinations for UG and PG programmes. The university will provide online grade cards for other semesters.

Vice Chancellor Babu Sebastian presided over the meeting.
