The Mahatma Gandhi University will take the lead in setting up an inter-university, inter-disciplinary biomedical research centre on the School of Medical Education campus at Thalappady near Puthuppaly.

The decision was taken after a brainstorming session organised by the university to chalk out the detailed project for the proposed super specialty hospital project being implemented on the Thalappady campus.

According to university authorities, the proposed centre would focus on Kerala-specific infectious diseases and problems of the geriatric population. Vice-Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal, who briefed about the project, said a core group would be formed soon to implement the project.
