More than 4000 artists will be participating in the week-long Onam celebrations beginning in the capital on Tuesday.

About 125 performances ranging from classical dances and music, to folk arts and martial arts will be staged at 16 venues across the city during the week. Folk artists participating in the fair will number more than 1200.

The Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurates the State level celebrations at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium in the evening at a function to be presided over by the Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor will be present.

Actor Mohanlal, who completes 30 years of acting, will be honoured at the function. Mr. Mohanlal will present a mega show later in the evening to express his gratitude.

The celebrations will conclude on September 7 with a pageant featuring more than 100 floats, bands and artistic performances.

The Home Minister said that more than 1500 police men would be deployed for providing security and controlling traffic during the celebrations. The police would monitor busy areas in the city through closed circuit television cameras.
