District Collector P.B. Salim will chair a meeting at the collectorate on December 12 to discuss the proposed ban on movement of heavy vehicles through the Thamarassery ghat road to facilitate road repair.
A meeting held here on Wednesday decided to seek the opinion of more stakeholders.
Elected representatives and office-bearers of socio-cultural organisations would be invited to attend the next meeting.
The contract for renovation of the 30-km road stretch from Koduvally to Lakkidi had been awarded to PMR Constructions. Work up to Adivaram had been completed.
Work on the ghat road could not be taken up because of heavy vehicular traffic. The contractors had agreed to complete work on the road in one month if the movement of heavy vehicles were banned. Nearly 9,500 vehicles passed through the ghat road each day.
It had been suggested that mini-buses be used between Lakkidi and Adivaram during the period.
Five alternatives routes had been suggested for heavy vehicles. These are Mysore – Gonikuppa - Thalassery; Baveli -Manathavadi - Thalassery; Kalpetta - Nilambur; Gudelpetta -Palakkad - Coimbatore; and Kalpetta - Vythiri - Tharuvana - Kuttiyadi.
The meeting was attended by C. Moyinkutty, MLA; M.P. Veerendrakumar; Public Works Department Executive Engineer P.N. Sasikumar; and Assistant Executive Engineer E.K. Hydru.
