October 22, 2011 09:06 pm | Updated August 02, 2016 03:56 pm IST - PALAKKAD:

The Palakkad District Government Medical College Action Committee on Saturday organised a dharna in front of the District Hospital demanding a Government Medical College in the district.

Inaugurating the dharna, Joby V. Chungath, vice-president of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy, said that when the State government announced four medical colleges in four districts, Palakkad was not considered. He said that was a big discrimination of the government against the people of Palakkad, one of the most backward districts of the State. The people of the district were forced to travel to Thrissur or Coimbatore for better medical facilities owing to lack of such facilities here. There were also no facilities to handle emergency accident cases, causing large number of deaths in the district, he said.
