May Day celebration in Kozhikode

More than 150 labourers from different business firms and enterprises vied for honours in the May Day Sports Festival organised under the aegis of the District Sports Council for labourers from the district in Kozhikode on Sunday.

Kerala State Sports Council president, T.P. Dasan inaugurated the programme at the Physical Education College Ground, East Hill, at 10 in the morning.

A variety of events including athletics, games, throw and jump events besides tug-of-war were held both for men and women separately during the festival.

The team of labourers from S.D.K. Health Care Unit Chelavoor emerged overall champions during the meet while the tam from P.K. Steels Nallalam became the first runners up.

The competitions came to an end by 1.30 p.m. and the winners were distributed prizes and certificates by the organisers. District Sports Council president K.J.Mathai presided over the function. Secretary C.A. Suresh Babu spoke.

Different trade unions including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) also organised different programmes including public meetings and rallies in the city in connection with the May Day observance.

The public meeting organised by the INTUC was inaugurated by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala near the Corporation Office in the city.
