The government has decided to entrust the distribution of nutritious food items through anganwadis in the district to the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, taking it away from the private agencies.
The move comes in the wake of widespread complaints of irregularities in the distribution of the food items, particularly at Attappady.
District Social Justice Officer R. Mrithunjayan told a meeting of the District Development Council here on Saturday that Maveli stores would now supply these food items to the anganwadis.
K. Achuthan, MLA, told the meeting that there were many complaints of corruption and irregularities in the distribution of nutritious food items, particularly at Attappady where a large number of tribal infants had died of malnutrition recently.
He alleged that the large-scale irregularities took place with the connivance of some officials of the Social Justice Department, and demanded action against those found guilty. District Collector K. Ramachandran, who presided over the meeting, promised to take action against the officials found guilty.
