Many positives for bar closure: Sudheeran

Says there is a dip in instances of domestic violence

The closure of bar hotels has brought about a lot of positive result in the State’s middle and lower class social milieu, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V.M. Sudheeran has said. But, unfortunately, the media had been highlighting its negative aspects, Mr. Sudheeran said releasing an anti-liquor documentary, Parudeesa , jointly made by the Mar Athanasios College For Advanced Studies, Thiruvalla, (Macfast) and the Radio Macfast, at the college auditorium here on Thursday.

Mr. Sudheeran said a survey conducted by the Kudumbasree Mission had found that the closure of bar hotels had resulted in a peaceful family atmosphere among the middle and lower classes. The survey also found considerable reduction in the number of domestic violence cases, wife beating, abuse of children, road accidents, and so on, he said.

He said that liquor and drug abuse were the bane of modern society. It was high time that the modern-day misconception that alcohol was an integral part of every celebration was dispelled, he said. He called upon the student community to launch a relentless campaign against liquor and drug abuse.

Abraham Mulamoottil, chairman, Peace People Planet; Satheesh Chathankary, lawyer; and Fr. Santhosh Thamarasserry, director, Yuvadeepti, spoke.
