The incessant rain that lashed Pathanamthitta in the past four days have submerged many parts of Upper Kuttand and affected normal life in this low-lying area.

Flood waters entered many settlement colonies in the Upper Kuttanad villages of Peringara and Nedumpram. Local people taking their children and other family members in small country boats along the flooded rural roads and across the inundated paddy fields, braving rain, has become a common scene in Upper Kuttanad.

Flood waters breached the protection walls (bunds) around many paddy fields in the Peringara village. Paddy crop in an extent of 42 acres at the Kaippala paddy fields at Vengal in Peringara has been destroyed as the protection bund collapsed on Monday evening.

The situation is worse at Alamthuruthy, Mepral, Niranom, Nedumpram, Azhiyidathuchira, Amichakari, Kallumkal, and Venpala-West.

Vehicular traffic was also affected on the Mepral-Azhiyidathuchira Road, Amichakari Road, Niranam Duck Farm Road, Kadapra-Theveri Road, and so on with the flood waters submerging these roads along many stretches.

No potable water

Scarcity of potable water is a major problem facing many parts of Upper Kuttanad as a good number of wells have been polluted with flood waters. Water supply through the waterlines of the Kerala Water Authority too has become irregular.
