Mannam Jayanthy Celebrations Begin

The 135th Mannam Jayanthy celebrations by Nair Service Society (NSS) began and the NSS headquarters at Perunna on Sunday.

The Nair Prathinidhi Samelan hled as part of the celebrations adopted a resolution calling for implementation of the recommendations of the National Commission for the Economically Backward among the Forward Communities.

The commission headed by Maj. Gen (Rtd.) S R Sinhu had made recommendations for bringing parity between the OBCs and members of the forward communities who do not pay income tax It had also called for formulating welfare scheme for the economically backward among forward communities in the area of education, employment health and housing. The most important among the recommendations was the provision for constituting welfare corporations at the national and State level for the benefit of the economically backward among forward communities.

In another resolution the conference called for withdrawing the certain provisions in the GO (p) No. 199/2011 G.Edn. dated 1.10.2011on constituting Teachers’ Bank as part of the School Education Package.

These provisions went against the provisions in the agreement between private school managements and the State government and also interfered with the right to manage assured for the private managements. The conference pointed out that it was not correct to bring in long term changes in the system as part of a one time settlement.

In another resolution the conference called upon the authorities to take immediate steps to bring down the water level in Mullaperiyar dam to 120 ft and to find a lasting solution by constructing a new dam at the site. The conference also called upon the State government to withdraw the Bill placing Devaswom appointments through PSC and also to constitute a Devaswom Recruitment Board for the purpose.

The speech of NSS president P K Narayana Panicker was read out by NSS treasurer P N Narendranathan Nair on the occasion. K N Viswanathan Pillai Karayogam Registrar extended vote of thanks.

The day began early at perunna with the offering of floral tributes at Mannam Samadhi by NSS leaders, dignitaries and thousands of community members wh thronged the venue. The conference was followed by cultural programmes. Celebrations will continue on Monday with the chief minister Oommen Chandy inaugurating the Mannam Jayanthi Sammelan. Finance Minister K M Mani, KPCC (I) president Ramesh Chennithala vice chairman of the Kerala Higher Education Council T P sreenivasan will grace the occasion.
