A 61-year-old man, Sasidharan, of Oachira, was sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.40,000 after being found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl. The sentence was pronounced by the District and Sessions Judge, Ashok Menon, on Wednesday.

Failure to pay the fine will invite additional imprisonment of two years. Prosecutor for the case Sudhir Jacob said that the incident pertaining to the case took place at Edava during April 2013. The victim is from an economically weak family and the convict is a widower.

While the victim’s mother had gone for work, Sasidharan lured the girl from her house in at Oachira and took her to a distant relative’s house at Edava. There he raped the victim.

Meanwhile the victim’s mother lodged a complaint with the Oachira police station that her daughter was missing. Investigations led to the arrest of Sashidharan when the victim was found with him at Edava.

Mr. Sudhir convinced the court that Sasidharan had lured the victim by assuring her that he will get her married to his son. Twelve witnesses were examined in the case.
