The blockade of the roads on either side of the inter-State Walayar check-post owing to the heavy flow of vehicles following the closure of Velamthavalam check-post and the Sabarimla pilgrimage season has resulted in inordinate delay for passenger and goods traffic.
The problem has been continuing for the past ten days. The vehicles are lined up to Navakkara in Tamil Nadu, more than five km from the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.
As the bus services get suspended at Chavadi, the passengers have to walk down three km to reach Walayar.
Because of this blockade, the inter-State buses from Palakkad to Coimbatore are diverted from Kanjikode through Kozhipara check-post to Chavadi and to Coimbatore. That means, the passengers cannot avail the service of Palakkad-Coimbatore inter-State buses to travel from Kanjikode to Chavadi, a distance of nine km .
There are only 12 policemen on duty to manage the vast area of the inter-State check post on the Kerala side. These policemen are forced to work round the clock, sources at the check-post said.
