Loco pilots to stage dharna today

October 18, 2010 08:07 pm | Updated 08:07 pm IST - Kozhikode:

Loco pilots will stage a dharna in front of the railway station here on Tuesday.

The protest, being held under the banner of the All India Loco Running Staff Association, is to demand fresh recruitment of loco pilots to fill vacancies.

The association spokesmen said the protest was being held as the Railway authorities had not made fresh appointments after question papers for the recruitment of loco pilots leaked out. They said more loco pilots were needed to reduce the workload of the staff and strengthen the safety of the passengers.

The association warned that the increase in the working hours of the loco pilots would imperil passenger safety. They said that in the past two years, nearly 75 new train services were started in Southern Railway, but there had been only a marginal increase in staff strength. The association said 14,000 posts of loco pilots were vacant.
