Literacy activists here were honoured on Tuesday as part of their felicitation in connection with a reception for the State literacy award winners this year.

A rally of the literacy activists was also held here in connection with the function jointly organised by the district panchayat, the District Literacy Mission and the Jansikshan Sansthan to mark the conclusion of the informal education week programme in the district and receive winners of the State literacy award winners. District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan inaugurated the programme in which district panchayat president K.K. Narayanan was the chief guest.

Among the literacy activists honoured at the function was Sub-Inspector T. Uthamdas, attached with the Pariyaram Medical College Police Station here. He had helped three semi-illiterate youth — whom he had nabbed for violating traffic rules — with learning to read and write.

The trio are now preparing for the SSLC equivalency examination.
