‘Liquor, medicines causing liver diseases’

July 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - KOLLAM:

A surfeit of liquor and medicines is the main cause for the increase of liver diseases in the State, Gastroenterologist K.R. Vinayakumar has said.

The figure of people with liver problems is increasing by the day and it can be anywhere around 20 lakh. But the big majority of them are not aware of it, he said.

Lifestyle changes

Dr. Vinayakumar said this while delivering the keynote address at a seminar organised by the Travancore Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday to observe the World Hepatitis Day.

He said some people had the habit of taking a lot of medicines even for simple ailments. This taxes the liver a lot and triggers liver diseases. Changing lifestyle and food habits also contributed to the problem.

The seminar was presided over by hospital CEO T.G. Thomas. The programme also comprised a free liver diseases detection medical camp led by Dr. Ajit Rony.
