N.K. Premachandran, MP, has said that more than liquor consumption, it is the problem of liquor addiction in the State which is causing concern. “The figures of people who feel they live to drink liquor are on the rise.”

Mr. Premachandran was speaking after inaugurating a function organised by the Guru Dharma Pracharana Sangham to observe Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi day here on Sunday.

At such a juncture, a social restriction on liquor to avoid possible liquor-based disasters was imperative, and the best way, undoubtedly, for that was total prohibition, Mr. Premachandran said.

‘Unproductive’

He said it would be the younger generation that would benefit from the liquor policy of the United Democratic Front government. The policy enabled society to redeem itself from the possible threat of anarchy, he said. “If we think of overcoming the problem through awareness, the irony is that the length of the queues in front of retail liquor outlets is only growing longer. It can result in creating a younger generation that is unproductive,” he said.

Mr. Premachandran said the importance of the dharma-based teaching of Sree Narayana Guru was increasing. The Guru had launched his reformation movement by strongly resisting superstitions and blind beliefs that reigned at that time.
