‘Aadu’ Antony, the lone accused found guilty of murdering civil police officer Maniyan Pillai, was on Wednesday sentenced to imprisonment for life under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code by Kollam District and Principal Sessions Court judge George Mathew.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 2 lakh on the convict under the same section.
He was also sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs.2 lakh under Section 307 of the IPC for attempted murder, three years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs.25,000 under Section 333 of the IPC for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty, one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs.10,000 under Section 468 of the IPC for forgery for the purpose of cheating, and one-year imprisonment and fine of Rs.10,000 under Section 471 of the IPC for using as genuine a forged document.
Public Prosecutor G. Moharaj said the judge clarified that imprisonment for life awarded meant “prison sentence till the end of the convict’s biological life”. The judge also pronounced that in case the convict got remission on the murder charge at some time in future, the sentences for the other sections of the IPC under which Antony was found guilty would commence thereafter.
Mr. Mohanraj said the judgment also stated that in case the fine was realised, Rs.2 lakh should be paid to the dependent family members of Maniyan Pillai and Rs.2 lakh to Assistant Sub-Inspector K. Joy, who was stabbed by Antony on the night of June 26, 2011.
The court verdict also says that the dependent family of Maniyan Pillai is also entitled to apply for victim compensation under Section 367 A of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
