The left-leaning women’s organisations in the state have decided to seek legal recourse against Forest Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar and Government Chief Whip P.C. George for having made controversial remarks that did not ‘befit’ the culture of the land.
The state unit of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and the Kerala Mahila Sangam took out separate demonstrations here on Wednesday.
Inaugurating the public meeting of the AIDWA after its march culminated at the Gandhi Square, association state secretary K.K. Shylaja said that a majority of the populace has taken strong exception to the ‘derogatory’ remarks made by Mr. George at a public meeting held at Pathanapuram regarding a female personnel of the Watch and Ward at the Legislative Assembly and those against former Minister A.K. Balan. “Such comments are not expected from a parliamentarian with significant experience in the political arena. The government has yet again displayed its ignorant attitude towards public sentiments by committing such shameful actions,” she said.
Ms. Shylaja also urged the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to rein in the actions of the members of his government.
She also said that a joint discussion of the women’s organisations in the state will be convened at Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday (November 3) to arrive at a consensus regarding the agitation programmes that will be organised with an intention to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The activists also defaced the images of Mr. Kumar and Mr. George during the demonstration.
Meanwhile, the group of Kerala Mahila Sangam activists led by State joint secretary C.G. Sethulakshmi, held a march across the town and later burned Mr. George in effigy at the Gandhi Square.
