The Left parties are not averse to forging a national-level electoral understanding with the Congress if the latter is prepared to abandon its neo-liberal economic policies, CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said.

The neo-liberal economic policies pursued by both the BJP and the Congress were by and large same. While the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was vigorously pursuing their economic policies, the Congress was not seen diluting its stance on the issue, Mr. Balakrishnan told reporters here on Sunday.

The CPI(M) did not see anything inappropriate in siding with the Congress to ward off the “communal polarisation” agenda pursued by the BJP in States ruled by the saffron party, he said while leading the LDF’s north zone “Janajagratha” yatra here.

However, the CPI(M) was yet to make up its mind on forging ties with the Congress to ward off the threats from the BJP, Mr. Balakrishnan said.

Solar report

On the solar commission report which had indicted some Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the CPI(M) leader said the LDF government had opted to seek legal opinion to circumvent possible hassles while framing charges against top political party leaders.

There was no impropriety on the part of the State in framing charges against the Congress leaders in the alleged scam and the Opposition party need not have to be unduly perturbed over the emerging developments, he said.

On the proposed State-wide yatra “Padayorukkam” led by Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, the CPI(M) leader tried to belittle the march saying that the simmering rebellion and bickering within the Congress party would intensify once the proposed march was flagged off on November 1.

Mr. Balakrishanan addressed public rallies at Chattamchal in Uduma segment, Kanhangad and Kalikadavu in Thrikkaripur Assembly constituency before entering Kannur later in the day.

The yatra, that will traverse through all Assembly segments, will culminate at Ollur in Thrissur on November 3.
